Lachonya Thompson
Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs
Lachonya Thompson is a senior human resources professional with over a decade of experience in business operations, including human resources, strategic planning, policy development, organizational development and leadership. Lachonya began her career at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2007 as the HR Facilitator in the School of Education, where she later became the HR Manager. Since that time, she has served as HR Generalist at the Carolina Population Center, Associate Director of HR, Associate Dean of HR, Interim Senior Associate Dean for Operations and Strategy, and Special Assistant to the Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. She also previously served as Assistant Provost for Academic Personnel in the Office of the Provost.
Lachonya currently serves as Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs in the Office of the Provost. In this role, Lachonya oversees a variety of faculty personnel functions, including but not limited to, the faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure process; faculty leaves; and faculty performance conduct issues. Most recently, she spearheaded the launch of the Provost Distinguished Faculty Leaders Program (PDFL) which welcomes its inaugural cohort in Fall 2023. Lachonya is an alumna of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, earning her Bachelor’s in Communication in 2007. She also holds a Master of Science in human resources management from Western Carolina University and a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University. She is the 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Encourager of Learning and Development (OELD) award, and she has been a proud member of the Carolina Black Caucus since 2015.
